A.M. Britwell’s book, Sitting by the Windowsill of Life with a Spiritual Friend, is a collection of poetry. Inspired by the soulful George Harrison, the poems include subjects from the Lord and peace in life and the afterlife. The poet’s voice is gentle, encouraging, and enlightening. The words express encouragement to embrace differences, to be confident, and to live in the light. Enlightenment can be gained by understanding God and ourselves, mere mortals. Many of the poems read like letters written to quiet and unassuming souls. All offer hope in an often-chaotic world.
The poems from Sitting by the Windowsill of Life with a Spiritual Friend echo lyrics written and sung by my favorite Beatle, George Harrison. That fact, and the dreamy cover art, is what drew me to this collection by A.M. Britwell. The cover image is reminiscent of a music album cover. So, already, from the top, music and poetry coincide. But it is the words that sound like Harrison’s warm and loving spirit that had me reading several poems a day. In dark and uncertain times, this book brings love and light. What I most enjoyed about this book is the introspective, cosmic quality that exudes from it. Like one of my all-time favorite poems, the legendary Desiderata by Max Ehrman, I found a simple complexity in the writing that is both cathartic and transportive. Each section of the collection is like a short vignette or passing view from a window. I highly recommend this collection of uplifting luminaries inspired by George Harrison, a true prophet of music, love, and light.
