Smokescreen is a work of fiction in the spy thriller, international drama, and suspense subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Khaled Talib. In this sensational and thrillingly intricate work, we find ourselves embroiled in a complex international web of intrigue when journalist Jethro Westrope happens upon a murder scene in Singapore. Whilst spies and associates from international higher powers discuss a final solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the murderous web surrounding the death of Niki Kishwani pulls Jethro into a web of conspiracy and conflict that will either reveal all or end his life in the process.

Author Khaled Talib knows how to deliver a thriller, and it was the meticulous pacing and delivery of detail that really kept me hooked through chapter after chapter of this intriguing story. There’s a lot to take in, but Talib delivers dialogue and exposition beautifully, offering character and drama but also feeding in those important little facts that will suddenly grow into a larger revelation later on. I loved the pressured feel of the drama from Jethro’s perspective, where all eyes land on him and he’s constantly looking over his shoulder. His emotions were never overdone or exploited, but realistically portrayed in his actions and narrative to show what grit and determination real people can have, even under unimaginable circumstances. Overall, I found Smokescreen to be a fabulously well-thought-out work that delivers every beat of action, suspense, and thrills that it promises, and I’d happily recommend it to espionage enthusiasts everywhere.
