Síofra's Tale: A Short Sci Fi Romance is a science fiction short story written by Jennifer Fales. Siofra is a botanist who lives on Neamh, an exoplanet she and Orson, a retired planetary engineer, colonized many years ago. She’s curious about the three men who have just come to visit them. Orson has insisted that they are not at all interested in visiting with a botanist, but she cannot resist wheeling a tray of food into the room where Orson and his guests are playing cards. The strangers all seem in awe of her, but one alone stands out in her eyes. He’s a younger man with pale skin that blushes easily and green eyes. She enjoys saying his name, Tavarius McNally, and he tells her that his grandfather had fond memories of her, albeit when she was known under a different name. Tavarius’ father, Conall, is a brutal man, but it is his grandfather, Seamus McNally, who shares a bond with the young man. Conall’s purposes in ordering this visit are not to Tavarius’ taste, but he feels oddly secure about his encounter with the startlingly beautiful woman.

Jennifer Fales’ science fiction short story, Síofra's Tale: A Short Sci Fi Romance, is haunting and lovely. The author instills a dreamlike quality to her story as the lonely Siofra challenges the strict rules and observances her husband has decreed for her for so many years. Her first encounter with the heir of McNally Interstellar seems set for the two of them alone, her husband and the other two guests disappearing into the background as they meet and appraise each other. Siofra’s background is a fascinating one, and her name, which means 'changeling,' has special significance for Tavarius. I found myself captivated by this story and its unworldly hero and heroine. It’s lyrical and compelling, and it’s most highly recommended.

Siofra’s Tale by Jennifer Fales is a short science fiction story that takes place on the planet Neamh. The story begins with Orson, a retired planetary engineer, and his wife, Siofra, entertaining guests from an interplanetary cargo company. Among the guests is their old friend’s grandson, Tavares McNally. When Siofra enters the gaming room to serve refreshments, the guests are salivating over her naked beauty. When Orson suggests she put some clothes on, she apologizes for making them uncomfortable with the excuse that she is alone so much that she forgot to get dressed. While she is gone, the men inquire about her, and Orson tells them that a long time ago he and his wife, Fiona, went swimming. A creature attached itself to her and a mutation began, and her fate is somehow tied to the planet. He renamed her Siofra. When Tavares learns that Orson will not touch his exotic wife, his interest in her is magnified. But so are the unhealthy intentions of his deviant companions.

Ms. Fales does a superb job creating a magnificently described exotic planet, as well as its inhabitants. With the mutual attraction of the blue Siofra, whose name means 'changeling child', and 19-year-old Tavares, I was reminded of the relationship in the movie, Avatar. But that’s all. Siofra’s tale is more about the lust of the degenerate companions and the chivalry of Tavares. When the group decide to go swimming to check out a cave, tensions are brought to a point of no return. Jennifer’s short story is jam packed with a multitude of information, emotion and wonder. Well done!
