Solomon Levi MacKeefer: A Gypsy with a Very Great Heart is an inspirational novella written by Gordon Planedin. The hitchhiker was tired and losing hope of ever getting a ride when he finally saw a car up ahead pulling over and waiting for him. The driver was friendly and told him that he could take him for another forty miles. The hitchhiker settled into the comfort of the car seat and savored the cooling breeze of the air conditioner. The driver then mentioned that he could probably get food and lodging at Solly’s Bar and Grill, which was in the next town.
Sure enough, the owner of Solly’s, named Bud, welcomed the hitchhiker, made him a full breakfast, and offered him work riding around on a lawnmower and cutting the lawns. Bud did more than that, however; he offered the stranger a place to live, a small cottage on the property, and gave him a job setting up the restaurant each morning. Suddenly, the homeless and hungry man had a job, food, and a home. He also had found a friend who loved to sit and chat with him when the Bar and Grill closed down at night, and that was how the hitchhiker learned about Solomon Levi MacKeefer, Solly for short, and the impact he made on everyone he came in contact with.
Gordon Planedin’s Solomon Levi MacKeefer: A Gypsy with a Very Great Heart is a well-written and compelling tale about one man who changes so many lives through his kindness and love. The author’s plot reads like a marvelous fable, and his characters are authentic and real. Can one man change so many hearts and minds, especially young ones? I’d like to think so, and found this book persuasive in that it shows how such a thing could happen. I also loved the fact that the author actually believes it’s possible and has been actively involved in supporting charities that Solly, no doubt, would approve of. Solomon Levi MacKeefer: A Gypsy with a Very Great Heart is most highly recommended.
