Starbuck: Nantucket Redemption by Garth Jeffries brings to life romance, intrigue, and time travel. The author has combined these three genres with such skill that you feel at times you are really back in the 1820s, experiencing a hard, dangerous, and scary life on a whaling schooner. The author catches the reader's attention with the prologue and then holds it throughout the book. The main character Peter Bois at times will have the reader wanting to wring his neck for being so stubborn, hardheaded, and obnoxious to the extent that nobody wants to be with him, not even his own family.
Peter Bois finds himself transported back in time to the 1820s when whaling was a thriving industry. The story revolves around Peter, his wife Charlotte, and children Sophie and Spencer, how he interacts with them, the people who work for him, and the people he comes into contact with. The universe has decided to teach Peter a lesson, taking him back in time to try to make him realize what sort of path he is traveling along and what he can expect if he continues along this path. The descriptions of life on a whaling schooner are fascinating and the reader will feel that they are right there. The characters were so realistic that they could be people you meet in your everyday life. It is a fairly fast-moving story. I found it a most enjoyable read and did not expect the ending, which was nice for change. This is a well-written book and very hard to put down as the reader wants to read just a bit more to find out what is happening next. Starbuck: Nantucket Redemption by Garth Jeffries is well worth more than one read. A highly entertaining story.
