Stars, Clouds, and Shadows by Hermione Lee is the first installment in the Ethereal Starshine Trilogy series. Evangelina Leclair, a sixteen-year-old angel, loves to roam above the clouds and traverse the islands of the Land of Heavenly Dreams. But when her parents assign her the task of assassinating Diome Lenoir, a devil, Evangelina's life turns upside down. She joins Horizon High, a human high school, and finds a way to get close to Diome. Meanwhile, Diome is attracted to Evangelina, and soon the two begin a romantic relationship. Evangelina's feelings for Diome create a rift with her parents, while Diome becomes a pariah among his own clan. With both of their clans at each other's throats, will Evangelina and Diome find a way to be together? And at what cost?
Author Hermione Lee has a knack for crafting engaging young adult romance tales with a supernatural flair. Stars, Clouds, and Shadows is no different. Imagine Romeo and Juliet with angels and demons, and you will end up with something like this. Lee's smooth writing and the brisk pace of the plot make the book a joy to read. There are no dull moments as each passing page works toward further development of the characters. The main protagonists, Evangelina and Diome, are easy to love and sympathize with. Their romance is sweet, and I found myself rooting for them to end up together. The story seems to hint at upcoming books in the future. Personally, I can't wait to read them. Recommended to fans of young adult supernatural romance novels!
