This book is a quick read with lots of excellent illustrations. Your child will enjoy learning about safety when out in public. Stephanie Chan wrote Staying with Adults Outside because she loves children and is concerned for their safety. Children can easily be distracted and drawn away by many things. Children must learn that when outside the house, they must be mindful and stay close to their adult caregivers. Stephanie also includes the importance of manners. Well-mannered children are rewarded with more public activities than impolite children. Reading this book with your child will open the door for hours of discussions on safety and proper behavior.
Often, children are independent and don’t understand the concerns their parents have for their safety. Staying with Adults Outside by Stephanie Chan helps children realize that it is not just their parents who want their children to stay close. Young children often do not know about the dangers lurking in public places. Safety is not usually a child’s concern, but it should be foremost in a parent’s mind. This book broaches topics such as manners, asking permission, being polite, staying near the adult guardian and waiting for them, and safety. A good exercise is to ask your child why they should not stand or climb on chairs. Discuss their answers and help them understand safety reasons. Ask the many questions this book addresses and then continue to build on the conversation and expand it to other areas of safety and manners. Your children will relate to the illustrations.
