James believes he has his hands full with navigating life as a fifth grader. His strategy involves regular conversations with the friendly bus driver, Ms Tammy, about how to avoid his archenemy, Dylan. When his older sister Laura falls ill and is diagnosed with leukemia, James has to set his problems aside and face the very real possibility of losing his only sibling. He partners with his close friend Luke to brainstorm ways he can help keep Laura's spirits up during her treatment. Follow James and Luke as they delve into a series of adventures to achieve their objective in Jim Mahler's Sunrise Undefeated.

Jim Mahler's Sunrise Undefeated explores family bonds in moments of adversity. Young readers will relate to James's conflicts with Dylan and his attempts to reason with him, where peer pressure often causes friction within the larger group. The dialogue seamlessly transitions from casual, highlighted by James's exchanges with Luke, to deeper, meaningful conversations as his family tries to maintain a semblance of normalcy in Laura's presence. The author includes humorous moments to lighten the narrative's mostly serious tone; for example, Luke's hilarious take on James's dream. The author uses clues that link seemingly unrelated puzzles and connect all the characters, without deviating from the family-oriented theme. Mahler's delicate balance of drama, subtle humour, and life lessons, delivered at a moderate pace, results in a captivating novel that will appeal to all ages. I enjoyed reading Sunrise Undefeated and look forward to more from this talented author.
