Sunshine Laughing: The Poetry of Anna-Marie Fuller is a collection of poems and illustrations by Anna-Marie Fuller. The book is presented as a legacy to Anna-Marie Fuller by her husband, Peter Fuller. The compilation begins with Peter's loving foreword, describing Anna-Marie's life and love of words as a form of art. We learn of Anna-Marie's devotion to writing, teaching, love, and spirituality. From there, the poetry is arranged into sections representing Peter's gathering of her works based on the time of the writing and underlying themes. Interspersed within the words are sketches drawn by both Anna-Marie and Peter. The book also introduces Anna-Marie's university scholarship fund which has been set up in her memory.
Sunshine Laughing is a two-fold experience. On the surface is Anna-Marie Fuller's poetry. The poems are deep and insightful, even those written when she was a young woman. Some are whimsical while others have a depth of expression showing tremendous insights into the human condition. As Anna-Marie's life moved from student to teacher, young woman to wife, and as she found religion, the poetry remains relatable and well crafted. The second, unexpected, facet of this work is the deep sense of love and loss experienced by Peter that comes through not only in his words but with the decisions on format and placement. For example, leaving her words in their original form demonstrates the care a loved one takes while honoring a loss. Peter and Anna-Marie's story is one of inspiration for love and support while Anna-Marie's poetry is a pleasure to read.
