This week I’ve been enjoying Cecilia Copeland’s science fiction novel Surviving The Gauntlet, which is the first entry in the Taltrix series.
The story focuses on the journey of Redder Torch – a.k.a. RT – as she forges a path for herself in the universe while trying to avoid the influence and legacy of her father, a legendary criminal whose claim that RT is a messiah figure has left her with few trustworthy allies. As she prepares to undertake the challenging Gauntlet to prove herself, the stakes couldn’t be any higher; failure will mean death, and success will mean confirming her father's claims and reigniting the largest conflict that the galaxy has ever seen.

Surviving the Gauntlet caught my eye with its promise of fusing science fiction and fantasy to create an epic adventure, and within a few chapters, it became clear that the author’s writing pedigree is of an extremely high standard. The full spectrum of both genres is fully and expertly utilized to build a dynamic and compelling world that hooked me immediately and built an incredible backdrop for a stunning narrative. RT is immaculately presented, leaping off the pages as someone you can’t help but root for as her arc explores the themes of legacy and expectations. The world of Taltrix is stunningly presented thanks to Cecilia Copeland’s outstanding gift for prose, and the unique perspective of protagonist RT allows for a story that is epic in scope whilst exploring universal ideas of personal identity. This is one of those science fiction novels that fans of the genre simply cannot afford to miss.
