That McKenzie Girl by Jesse Gordon is a fun, lighthearted, slice-of-life story. Twenty-one-year-old Victor Navarro lives with his best friend, a gamer who livestreams in his underwear, called Brand. Victor isn't at a great stage in life, but Brand needs him—he's in free fall after his latest girlfriend dropped him just before their livestream. A club night goes badly wrong, and Victor swears he’s done with dating forever until Arin moves in next door and Victor finds himself in the strangest of relationships. But Arin McKenzie is hiding a secret. Why did she appear in Victor’s life at just the right moment?
That McKenzie Girl by Jesse Gordon is a cleverly written comedy about life. Don’t expect fast-paced action with thrills and spills—this is a nicely paced story that centers mostly on the main characters’ daily lives, not high-stakes drama. Although there is plenty of drama in it, at times it will have you laughing out loud. Jesse has a nice turn of phrase and has created realistic characters with realistic lives. Many readers will identify with them on some level, and, honestly, you’ll love Victor and Brand—two down-to-earth lads with a jumbled, hectic life but always there for each other when things go wrong. This is a wonderfully easy read, filled with fun, laughter, and disasters, but with an oddly comforting feel. If you feel like your life is a disaster zone, I highly recommend reading this book. It won’t just make you laugh; it’ll make you feel better about yourself.
