The Adventures of Lefty and Righty: The Windy City is an entertaining and educational children’s picture book written by Lori Orlinsky. Lefty and Righty are two extraordinary socks who have snuck out of the house to go on an adventure. Lefty and Righty are on a quest to experience the best Chicago has to offer. They tour the city on famous trains, eat delectable Chicago-style hot dogs, and even take in the sights on a water taxi. They experience out-of-this-world history and nature at the Field Museum and experience The Bean up close. And after such an eventful day, Lefty and Righty go to an actual White Sox game. This book is a delightful celebration of Chicago.

Lori Orlinsky has written another marvelous children’s story with clever rhymes to capture a child’s imagination and attention. The Adventures of Lefty and Righty: The Windy City hits close to home as Lori also lives in Chicago and delightfully explains all the things that make the city great. The illustrations by Kenn Vidro are clever and colorful and give off an aura I feel fits in well with Chicago. I found the book both educational and interesting, as I never knew there were so many attractions in Chicago. I will have to add it to my bucket list! I loved that Lori also added more details about all the attractions and places she mentions – allowing the reader more insight into Chicago and its history. This is a wonderful story for anyone interested in Chicago or a fun tale of some mischievous socks.

The Adventures of Lefty and Righty: The Windy City by Lori Orlinsky is a charming and comical children’s picture book about a pair of socks who decide to hit the road for just one day. While they are out and about, Lefty and Righty find themselves enjoying several different kinds of human activity that are sure to bring a smile to many children’s faces as well as adults. The illustrations take you on a ride of fun-filled laughter and bring to mind Sunday morning cartoons. These creations by Kenn Vidro will make you want to poke at your socks in the dryer to see if they might come to life as well.

Lori Orlinsky’s The Adventures of Lefty and Righty is the kind of story that will make you smile, laugh, and learn all at the same time. As entertaining as the story is, the author also inserts facts for those who might live outside the Chicago area. Orlinsky relays the information in a way that works smoothly with the story, with additional facts at the very end of the book that will not only educate children but parents as well. There is a wonderful cohesion between learning and reading a fun story that children won’t want to pass up. It would be a great tale to read in elementary schools, especially on December 4th, which happens to be National Sock Day. Creating puppets from socks would also be a fun activity to include.
