The Adventures of Wally the Sausage Dog Crossed with a Poodle and Felix the Frog is exciting and fun to read. Brett Finneran uses rhythmic and rhyming prose. The illustrations are delightful. Young children will enjoy having this book read to them, while older children will love reading the story. One lesson in the book is that often new friends can be found by doing a good deed. Wally, a dog, and Felix, a frog, make great but unconventional friends. The story takes place in Australia. Children will be given a look at some of the things unique to Down Under. The two friends travel and meet all types of animals found only in Australia. Reading this book will help children learn much about wildlife in Australia while loving the sing-song quality of the text. This book contains the two main characteristics of a good book: the joy of reading and learning.
It is crucial that children learn to enjoy reading. Books can take children (as well as adults) to places they may never visit in real life. Reading also stimulates one’s imagination. Children will learn how to be friends with those different from themselves. Wally and Felix make friends with all types of animals. Children can benefit from realizing that all humans are on this planet together and should strive to get along. Children will learn about wombats, platypuses, cockatoos, koalas, lorikeets, and other animals. Children love animals, and this book will not disappoint. It teaches without making children think they are in school.
