The Anima Corps by N.P. Conti introduces a fascinating world in an engaging urban fantasy tale with strong supernatural elements. Meet Ryder Everett, a military ranger who has gone rogue. He belongs to a species of angelic shapeshifters that can take the form of any animal, are incredibly strong, and have highly developed senses. The last thing he expects is to be one of those called to Kore to become part of the Anima Corps, which guards the earth. Aspen Lovetta has a grudge against the Corps, which she blames for the murder of her family, and being called to work for the Corps is the worst form of betrayal to her family. That is, until she meets Ryder. The bond between Aspen and Ryder is beyond the physical. Now, a powerful evil has escaped and is on a path to destroy the world. Can Aspen and Ryder stop it and save the world and all species?

N.P. Conti's story had me fully invested in the characters and the worldbuilding. I was instantly captivated by how well the author explored the internal struggles of the characters. The idea of another dimension beyond Hellgate, a frightening place where demons roam, felt original to me. While characters like Ryder and Aspen are complex and relatable, the author delights with expertly crafted scenes, fluidly transitioning from streams of consciousness to dramatic dialogues and pulsating action, such as the battles with demons. The characters, like the mysterious Gregory Finch, the wise general Ansel Winters, and Vangelis Katopodis, are well-imagined and skillfully explored. The author explores themes of loyalty, the struggle between good and evil, and the concept of identity. The Anima Corps captivated me with its excellent prose, memorable characters, and well-written conflict that fuels the tension. I stayed up late reading this book.
