The Backward Kitty by Trista Shaye is the first book in the Big the Barn Cat series. Big (that's “Bee” with a g) the barn cat has a specific role on the farm, like the other cats, and he takes his job seriously. Without him, everything would fall apart. But even with his attention to detail and keen eye, not everything goes the way he would like, which is evident when he discovers a kitten hiding in Big's favorite spot. When the kitten has no name or answers to important questions, Big decides it's his cat's duty to ensure the new guy makes his way back home. Big even gives the stranger his very own name. As if Big's job wasn't enough, rumor has it that the W's farm is on the brink of despair and people are saying that the farm is even starving! The audacity. Big supposes all the weirdness is thanks to it being Halloween and things are only getting weirder.
Such a great read for all ages that captures the essence and personality of cats. Anyone with cats will immediately understand the cat perspective that Trista Shaye has created so wonderfully. Big embodies the attitude of a cat with details that are delightful and spot-on. Big is the narrator of the story so his attitude is woven into every page and has moments where he talks directly to the reader through snarky quips. The story revolves around Big trying to get rid of Skiziks the kitten by searching for where the cat belongs, but the search ultimately draws the two cats together. Shaye has delivered a tale that is truly a cat lover's dream and would make a fun family read as it's perfect for any age. Cute illustrations are woven throughout the story and give charming visuals to the various characters and specific moments that occur. At the end of the story, Shaye supplies a breakdown of the main characters to explain their jobs, mannerisms, and a fun fact about them. Activities are included such as a recipe for cookie bars, pumpkin carving or painting with design ideas, and an animal noises game. A highly recommended treat, The Backward Kitty is great for all ages and adds activities that families can enjoy together.
