Anna and Andy are hummingbird siblings. They live in the Nice Lady’s backyard. When the Nice Lady’s grandchildren come to visit, there’s lots of fun and excitement as the hummingbird siblings join in the games. You see, Anna and Andy can talk to the children. They share all kinds of adventures including a scavenger hunt, and a visit with the imaginary dragon, Zen, who takes the children and the hummingbird siblings on a wonderful ride. They even visit a circus. Anna and Andy learn a lot of new things from the grandchildren too, like what a squirt gun is and how to have fun in a wading pool. The most difficult thing they learn is how to say goodbye when it’s time for the grandchildren to go home.
Linda P. Young’s picture book story, The Backyard Adventures of Anna and Andy Hummingbird: Anna and Andy Meet the Grandchildren, is the third book in the Anna and Andy series. Accompanied by wonderful, colorful illustrations, each of the stories, some true, some fantasy adventures, creates a new adventure that includes these fantastic hummingbird siblings. The young reader can join along in the adventures and, at the same time, learn something new about hummingbirds. According to the author (and I believe her), “hummingbirds have such personalities” and they enjoy a good adventure and time to play. The author has definitely created two hummingbird siblings with unique personalities. And, remarkably, (but only in the imagination and fantasy of children), the ability to communicate with children. A real treasure of a book.
