Rita H. Rowe’s The Bad Seed features Jenna’s love for a boy who nobody likes based on his parents’ poor choices. After watching Tommy attempt to embarrass Joey, Jenna feels drawn to Joey. That afternoon, Jenna's mother tells her to stay away from Joey, and her best friend Marie tells her that he is a loser. On the second day of school, Tommy and Joey get into a fight before classes start, and Joey is expelled. While out with friends, Jenna catches sight of Joey and follows him. He leads her into a shed, where they spend time together for two weeks before Joey leaves. Heartbroken, Jenna focuses on school and works part-time at the local cafe. On leaving work one day, she finds Tommy waiting outside to walk her home. When she sees that Joey is behind him, she runs to Joey and kisses him. Tommy then plans to get rid of Joey.

Rita H. Rowe writes a gripping romance involving the judgmental gossip in a small town. Tommy’s treatment of Joey shows how easily other students will join in on putting another person down. I was angry that the teacher didn’t intervene, and that adults engaged in spreading rumors. I found it odd that Tim was the polar opposite of his brother Tommy. The alternating views between Jenna and Joey provide insight into their insecurities. The supporting characters added to the plot, and the tension built as people ostracized the couple. Every emotion, from sweet joy to tragic tears, made me feel as though I was part of the story. The ending was bittersweet. I could relate to this story on several levels from my life experience as an outsider in a small town. The Bad Seed will appeal to readers who like a realistic portrayal of the judgment young people must bear because of their parents' actions.
