Author Lloyd U. Nsek Sr. has a great sense of balance in bringing different elements of a story together. This confident command of the narrative makes for a truly unique blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and Christian allegory that is like nothing else I’ve read this year. The subject of spiritual awakening is no mean feat to have as the central crux of a story, but the tension surrounding the mysteries of the isle itself and the way the story builds with other interesting paranormal elements allows this theme to appear in unexpectedly powerful ways. I loved the psychological underpinning of the narration and the dialogue style, allowing natural plot elements to manifest on their own. This is an inspiring and action-packed tale that keeps readers interested with creative and well-timed twists, but it also leaves space to ponder the deep philosophical themes beneath the action. Overall, I recommend The Believer: Isle of Shadows and the Battle for Freedom as a must-read for fans of faith-based speculative fiction, and I can’t wait to read more from this talented, atmospheric author.
