When the president had what appeared to many as a last minute change of heart against signing the much-anticipated South American Free Trade Act, it took everyone by surprise and set in motion unforgettable historical events that could end very badly for those involved, especially the president herself. Her last minute decision to veto the Act was seen by many as dishonest; after all, she had run her campaign on that very Act. According to the Second Constitution, her actions could be tantamount to high treason, punishable by the death penalty, and the people were ready to exercise the power and freedom given to them by the new Constitution. However, only one man, Bill Waverly, the president's attorney, had a clue as to why all this was happening and he was determined to do whatever it took to save the president from impending doom. And so it began, a plan that had been orchestrated more than two decades ago by a group of devious but very farsighted Americans.
The Blue Folio by Matt McMahon is truly one of the best legal/political thrillers I have read in a very long time. The story has everything you would expect from an award-winning novel in this genre. Just get a comfy seat and get ready to witness gripping courtroom drama, blackmail, backstabbing, manipulation and all other dirty political games played at the highest levels. I loved this captivating story and I was hooked from the very first chapter, but if there is one thing that stood out for me above all, it is George Comstock's speech of August 5, 2023. For me this speech set the whole tone for the story and all that happened therein. It is just one of those things I am bound to remember for a very long time. For a moment there, I even forgot that I was reading a fiction story; it felt so real and so profound. I could, in very many ways, relate to the speech. Reading that speech made me feel like I was there, like it was 2023 and I was part of that crowd. For me that was the moment that set in motion the events of this extraordinary story. This is a legal/political thriller unlike any other.
