The Bone Taker by Scott Charles is an adventurous children’s book in the Creeptown collection with all the excitement of an Indiana Jones adventure but with a lot more bones! Arlo is a kid from a paleontologist family, where he grew up surrounded by knowledge about the subject. He is inclined to get into trouble, together with his best friend Darius, who loves making movies so much that he might just be a future Spielberg. After sneaking into a school trip to the newly opened museum extraordinaire, Arlo soon realizes that strange things are happening there. Together with Darius, and his two schoolmates, Kayla who doesn't give him the time of day, and Stetler, a boy who always seems to have a bone to pick with him, Arlo falls into the vortex of a bony adventure that might cost him more than he ever imagined.
Scott Charles writes in an accessible and fun style, depicting the atmosphere and emotions in The Bone Taker in an exciting way. Tackling the important themes of growing up, bullying, being different, and trying to find one’s place in this world at a young age, Charles tells a story of courage and friendship. The characters are well developed, with quirky and anything but ordinary natures. The story is narrated by Arlo, the main character, in a captivating way and is refreshing and energetic. The Bone Taker will not take your bones; however, it will capture your heart with a wonderful display of fun characters, unwavering elation, and a dose of excitement and adventure, showing that we are all unique and there is a place for everyone in this world.
