The Bootlegger’s Wife by Denise Devine takes place in 1925 during the days of prohibition. Charlotte LeDoux and her bootlegger husband Gus own a night club together but this life style is about to end. As the club is raided by federal agents, Charlotte discovers her husband with another woman and she has just found out that she is pregnant. The world that she has known for the past nine years will never again be the same. Charlotte believes that the best thing she can for herself and her unborn child is run and hide from Gus. She applies for a housekeeping job with Will VanElsberg and changes her name to Esther Smith and her appearance as well. All is going well for Esther in her new life until Gus hires Will, who is a private investigator, to search for his missing wife. Esther doesn’t know whether to stay or flee, confess or hide, and the struggle becomes harder each day.

The Bootlegger’s Wife brings the 1920’s to life with some mild violence, friendship, jealousy, and survival. I found it to be a really good story and am anxiously awaiting the following book to find out what happens next in Charlotte aka Esther’s life. I truly believe this would make a wonderful soap opera type drama perfect for nighttime TV. Denise Devine has written this book with a really good plot and characters that become real. The conclusion is too good to share but it is a must-read to find out the twists and turns that occur. I highly recommend The Bootlegger’s Wife be added immediately to your reading list. You won't be disappointed.
