In The Brave Fuzzy: A Microbiome Story by Eliana Miao and Pen & Pipette, the reader will learn two messages about microbiomes and their impact on your health while reflecting on connection and diversity. Did you know that your body is a well-oiled machine that functions on simple yet complex systems? The microbiome (blue and yellow fuzzies) is a family of organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses that all live together, aiding in digestion, stimulating immune support, fighting off diseases, and improving gut health. In the story, the blue fuzzies kept busy in their village (the body), but occasionally the village would become destroyed (possibly by eating the wrong food or an illness), and the fuzzies kept on working to rebuild it (get the body back in shape). One day, a lonely orange fuzzy came upon the village and, at first, was rejected for being different, but eventually the blue fuzzies realized that the orange fuzzy was also needed and was welcomed into the village. All of the fuzzies working together kept the village functioning at its optimal level (maintain health).
The Brave Fuzzy: A Microbiome Story by Eliana Miao and Pen & Pipette is ideal for any reader; adults could learn a little more about their bodies as well. Young children, especially those with an interest in science, would greatly benefit from this book, which will get their creative minds stimulated not only by reading the book but by learning from the colorful charts and layouts throughout the book. The author team has cleverly created a tool that the reader can navigate through and discover the ins and outs of how the microbiome operates in the body, including some tips on best practices. In learning about the impact of the microbiome, the reader can ensure that the village (body) functions at its peak. This book can be used in a group setting, read alone, or with an adult.
