The Butterfly and the Spider by Maryna Kiptsevich is a children’s story that opens with the birth of a butterfly named Violet. Each butterfly is born with special patterns on their wings that determine what their gift will be. Violet’s wings have musical notes. She mesmerizes the butterflies and other insects with her beautiful and enchanting music. Unfortunately, the word of her gift reaches the ears of an evil spider who disguises himself as a bee and captures her. One day, a curious sparrow follows her melodies to the reeds where she’s locked away. He needs to find a way to rescue her from the spider, but how? Readers are invited to find out if Violet will ever make it back home safely, where her music can blossom.
Maryna Kiptsevich's story has good pacing and enough excitement to keep young readers invested in the rescue mission. The plot was perfect and made the emotional stakes for Violet even bigger. I loved Violet’s innocence, which was a stark contrast to the manipulative spider. Violet’s vulnerability, gentleness, and trusting nature felt convincing because she was new to the world. The sparrow’s bravery gave this touching tale the hero it needed. I enjoyed looking at Siarhei Skiba’s artwork that beautifully illustrates everything that happens from scene to scene. The watercolor and ink visuals made the characters and their world come to life. Readers who enjoyed Julia Donaldson’s The Snail and the Whale for its similar lyrical and nature-oriented story would find so much to love about The Butterfly and the Spider.
