The Crow by Leslie Garland is a short young adult novel. The story starts with Dave's visit to the hospice with his mother. There he meets an old priest, nicknamed "Mad Father Patrick", who is a talker and soon engages his new friend in conversation. He narrates the story of Reginald Monday, who was the former parish councilor. Reginald was tasked with relocating the locals when a dam was built in the area. Father Patrick did not like Reginald. He believed that Reginald was a bad man and that he was responsible for the people losing their homes. Reginald Monday had a crow since he was little and Father Patrick thinks the crow influenced Reginald negatively. Is Reginald Monday a bad person like Father Patrick said? Find out how the story unfolds in the book.
Dave has a curious mind and is smart. He reminds me so much of my teenage years. He listened attentively to Father Patrick's account of Reginald's past and formed his own opinion without being influenced by the priest's story. I enjoyed the way Father Patrick explained Reginald's past and his observations of his character over the years. The old man has a good sense of humor and an undying love of alcohol. I was completely immersed in Father Patrick's story. I loved so many things about this book, including the choice of words, the sense of humor, the way David's emotions were described, and the engaging story. I believe young adults will find The Crow interesting. Leslie Garland's style of writing is top-notch. I wish this book was longer because I loved it and I'm looking forward to reading similar books by this author.
