That peace was threatened after the Federation attacked a Cygni ship, killing some of its crew. The Federation launched mission Excalibur, which entailed handing over the captured ship and the surviving crew to 61 Virginis − a territory in the Cygni Empire star system. It had been rumored that the Cygni Empire was constructing a secret base on 61 Virginis. Excalibur would allow the Federation to avoid a looming war and spy on the Cygni Empire. Lovers of science fiction with a touch of conspiracy will find Jack Heape’s The Cygni Gambit an enthralling read. The author bases the plot on a tale of romance, deceit, power, secrets, money, honor, espionage, and politics. The vivid descriptions captured the mood and settings impressively. This had me feeling as if I was right there next to every participant in every scene. There is profound emotional depth in the storyline and the complex qualities of the role-players are boldly described. All this allowed me to connect with the protagonists and experience their extraordinary lives. Jake is an intelligent, daring, and fierce personality whose temperament can get in the way of his level-headed nature at times. As the second book in the Orion Federation series, this story can be better appreciated after reading the preceding installment.
