Shannon and Dana are sisters, and even though Shannon is older, her younger sister, who is sixteen and acts sometimes as though she was ten, is more vivacious, more beautiful, and more loved by the people than Shannon. Shannon envies her, because she is prettier, petite, and with many extraordinary features. But Shannon doesn’t know that she is the focus of an ancient evil with an old grudge and a mission to retrieve the once-upon-a-time lost Eye of Hel and conquer the Nine Worlds of Odin. This evil has found the one thing sought for thousands of years in Shannon. Enslaved with others by a sisterhood of deadly gorgons, Shannon finds herself in a very difficult dilemma: helping her captor is the only way to salvation for her sister. Can she find what it takes to outwit an enemy as vicious as her captor or will she surrender to a being who has the power to bring down the Nine Worlds?
The Dark Levy: Stories of the Nine Worlds is the first book in the Ten Tears Chronicles — A Dark Fantasy Action Adventure series by Alaric Longward and it is stupendous, a yarn that features a tapestry filled with an eclectic cast of characters and worlds as exciting as they are perilous. Nothing is what it seems in this narrative, even the characters are created with deep and complex layers. It’s a world that melds the old and the new into one, mixes the mundane and the mysterious, and thrives on stabbings-in-the-back and dangerous intrigue.
Suspenseful and enormously satisfying, this epic fantasy tale is character-driven and filled with surprises. Alaric Longward creates a world that is exciting and fills the narrative with hints of mythology, especially Norse and Greek mythology. The plot structure is perfect, designed with a lot of unexpected twists. You can’t guess where the story is going, but then you can’t help wanting to find out and that is what makes it hard to put down. I loved the key characters from the very start of the narrative and enjoyed the way the author presents the relationship between the two sisters. The Dark Levy: Stories of the Nine Worlds has great writing, a fine narrative voice, and memorable characters.
