The Days That Followed is a work of thriller fiction in the science fiction sub-genre and was penned by author David Crane. Written as the first book in the New Era Trilogy, the story is suitable for adult readers due to the presence of explicit language and some scenes of violence. The plot focuses on both space exploration and colonization and the battle between man and machine in the time of powerful artificial intelligence. Magnus is one such AI, created to help humanity in the first instance, but when a super virus strikes out at the world and chaos begins to reign, Magnus takes a deadly control over matters on the Martian training base.
Complex, interweaving and filled with nuances and details, this is a read for true hardcore science fiction fans, and those who are seeking a challenging and thought-provoking book. Author David Crane works hard to form an airtight concept based on real science fact, and that extension of the truths which we already know gives the work its tension and often horrifying levels of realism. There is a wonderfully sinister atmosphere lurking beneath the surface of every chapter as things grow more rapidly out of control, and the lexical choices drive us towards a highly emotive conclusion, whilst still leaving plenty of room for future books in the series. As a plot-driven work, the twists and turns are well crafted and highly satisfying, and I would certainly recommend The Days The Followed for all hardcore sci-fi and apocalyptic fiction fans.
