The Dead Don’t Pay (A James Wolf Murder Mystery) by James Arthur Donzella is a fast-moving detective murder mystery with smuggling thrown in for good measure, and a bit of romance on the side. From the start of the book, I found myself turning the pages just to find out what was going to happen next. The main character is James Wolf, a private detective who used to be in the police force, but when he lost his partner, Brad “Sully” Sullivan, he became a loose cannon and was forced out of the police force. Wolf is down on his luck when he gets an unusual job. Things start to go wrong when his car breaks down, and he misses an appointment.

In The Dead Don’t Pay by James Arthur Donzella, the most intriguing part of the story is when Sully keeps appearing as a ghost, bent on helping him solve the murder and the drug smuggling ring. Just as things slow down, you are taken on another adventure that ties into the story as to how Wolf will solve the murder and smuggling mystery. Sully reminds him of previous cases; Wolf uses the information he learned when investigating them to help with this one. Many other delightful characters wander in and out and help Wolf solve the case. The ending will not be what the reader is expecting. The author has written a most interesting and exciting detective story. It will keep you reading till the very last page and stay with you for days afterwards, as little things will bring parts of the story to mind. The last time I read a detective story this good was a Mickey Spillane novel. I am looking forward to reading the next one.
