The Disappearance of Kiki the Kitty is a delightful children’s book, written by Maria Rusu and illustrated by Iuliana Irimia. With a new kitten in the house, young April is in a panic when she cannot find her little furry friend. The family’s older cat, Merlot, adjusts to his new house-mate and the two become fast friends. April’s parents, Daisy and Larry, sometimes worry about their daughter as she conveys to them her ability to communicate with animals and see ghosts. When news travels the otherworldly grapevine that a sick puppy is situated at an abandoned house nearby, April’s neighbor, Mrs. Kay, and her dog, Torr, go with April to investigate.

I found the story of these animals and their gifted human to be a sheer delight. Not only does Maria Rusu incorporate the thoughts and emotions of two cats into the tale, but also the neighbor’s dog, Torr, which is well looked after by its owner. Although in need of a little polishing, the story of Kiki the Kitty, Merlot, April and a surprise guest at the end teaches the importance of trusting your instincts, ensuring the well-being of all pets and animals. While April’s parents found her animal stories to be larger than life, they also dismiss them as being nothing more than from the mind of an over-imaginative child. I could not help but smile at the fact that April felt safe and comfortable enough to raise the alarm to her neighbor, resulting in a surprise find... and just in the nick of time. I thoroughly enjoyed The Disappearance of Kiki the Kitty and recommend it to be read to all pre-school aged children, or as a read-it-yourself tale which can be enjoyed by older children, as they learn the value of life, and taking the word of a worried child at face value.
