Every hundred years or so, a virgin princess must be sacrificed to the dragons for the safety of a kingdom. Now it’s Princess Genevieve of Verdeux's turn to save hers when she's handed a golden token – the mark of the chosen. Genevieve accepts her fate, but everything is complicated by the mysterious arrival of a girl named Chris, a 1970s Berkeley student. To Chris, the whole scenario reeks of deception and she fervently questions the sacrifice. She's sure the dragons are out for more than innocent blood, but the only way to discover what they really want is to accompany Genevieve on her journey.
The Dragons’ Chosen by Gwen Dandridge has a refreshing premise, when two girls from different times and culture work together to find the truth behind the virgin sacrifice to the dragons. Genevieve is determined to follow her duty, but Chris successfully makes her question the dragons’ real intent. I enjoyed their constant banter about duty and one’s integrity. The plot has some good twists and pace, although there are some slow parts during the princess’s journey to the Crystal Mountain.
Even though the prose is simple, it still evokes fantasy wonders and magic, with ancient lands and dragons. The dialogue is witty and the narration through Genevieve’s first person POV is engaging and intriguing. All in all, Gwen Dandridge has won me over with The Dragons’ Chosen, and ultimately it is a story that fantasy fans will love. I look forward to reading more from this author.
