The Duck Who Couldn't Swim by Lee Porter is a children's picture book that follows the adventures of a young duckling who struggles to swim. Marigold has everything she could have wished for as a young duck -- a loving family and a home near a lake where her siblings and parents swim about. However, try as she might, Marigold can't swim. Her parents send her to swimming classes. But still, Marigold hasn't learned how to swim. Soon, Marigold's family starts swimming farther and farther away from the shore of the lake while Marigold strikes up friendships with Amber, a fish, and Coral, a mermaid. One day, Marigold sees a predator lurking below the surface of the water. She must warn her family. But how? Can she overcome her fear of swimming to help her family?

With courage and determination, even the most overwhelming challenges can be surpassed. The Duck Who Couldn't Swim is a tale of a young duckling who learns this fact when she finds herself in a situation that requires her to conquer fear to save her family. It's a beautiful story about inner spirit, courage, and willpower. Lee Porter's characters are likable, and young readers will find it easy to relate to them, especially Marigold. Amber and Coral are the two secondary characters who have brief yet important and enjoyable parts to play in Marigold's growth as a young duck. Illustrator Glori Alexander knocks it out of the park with her artwork, which enhances the story. All in all, this is an inspiring picture book for children to help them learn how to rise above the hurdles that come their way.
