The Emperor and the Last Apostle: A Novel of Ancient Rome by Lewis Ben Smith is a story of love, hope, and the endless love God bestows upon us. Succeeding his brother in a less-than-moral act, the new emperor, Domitian, rules Rome with an iron, cruel fist. When he demands the last living apostle, John, stand trial before him for worshipping a different god, he expects a weak and timid man, but what he sees instead is a fearless follower of Christ. However, his surprise at John’s demeanor is nothing compared to the miracle that takes place before his very eyes. Because of God’s powerful act, a profound change starts taking place in the hearts and minds of the Roman citizens. And John, thanks to his unwavering faith, fulfills the promise he made to Christ years before: that he would spread the Gospel till the end of his days.
I was fully immersed in this fictionalized version of Apostle John’s life. Lewis Ben Smith offers readers an enticing narrative style and captivating characters with an intriguing plot, making The Emperor and the Last Apostle a tantalizing and immersive read. Many of the characters I’d heard of in the Bible were mentioned on a broader scale, and I loved it; the personalities they were given made them all the more interesting. The novel skilfully depicts God's amazing works while successfully capturing ancient Roman times; it was an intoxicating experience. The Emperor and the Last Apostle is a beautiful reminder of why we serve Almighty God. I highly recommend it to Christians and fans of history, specifically ancient times.
