The Estrogen Chronicles: Circle of Friends by Cynthia Kumanchik follows Lucinda and her co-workers as they struggle through juggling their own lives and the deadly virus that is now threatening the small town of Sierra. Lucinda works in the local hospital as part of the admitting staff. They soon are bombarded with many sick patients suffering with flu-like symptoms; it is later determined to be an unknown virus that is attacking the town’s young and elderly residents. To top it all off, a crazed man with a gun demands that his sick baby be treated. Amidst the chaos at the hospital is Lucinda. Having her daughter suddenly sick and recently separated from her husband, she has her own personal issues to deal with. Will the town survive this devastating disease, and will Lucinda be able to move on and finally be happy? This is a story of love, compassion, and the importance of having true friends by your side.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Estrogen Chronicles: Circle of Friends. Kumanchik does a great job of describing how a hospital is run and showing that the employees are truly the heart of any medical center. Reading about Lucinda and her circle of friends will either remind you of the love and care you have experienced with your own friends or make you want to go out and make new friends. Having companions there for you, no matter what you are going through, is the heart of this book. Whether they were covering for her at work or giving her life-changing advice, Lucinda learned the true meaning of friendship. Overall, this was a great story. I became attached to all of the characters. I was laughing one moment, gritting my teeth another, and then practically crying at times. If you’re looking to read a novel that contains suspense, friendship, and a little bit of romance, then this is the book for you!
