Fans of horror will cheer for Robert J. Duperre’s new series, "The Rift. The Fall: An Undead Apocalypse Book 1". The story begins in the past with a young girl awaiting her fate. It quickly shifts to present day where archeologist, Dr. Ken Trudeau unsuspectingly enters a cave of horror. An ancient evil, in the form of a virus, lurks there waiting to unleash terror around the globe. The virus brings insanity and cannibalism to those infected. The dead walk, spreading fear, destruction, and carnage in their path.
Duperre’s style is dark and intense. The Mayan slant caught my attention first. The plot moves along quickly, keeping the reader turning pages to see what happens next. Do not read this book late at night when you are alone. You will find yourself listening for noises that are not there and wondering if something is coming up behind you. The illustrations, by Jesse David Young, added much to the atmosphere of the tale. The cover is exquisitely done. While this was definitely a dark story, the main characters, Joshua Benoit and Kyra Holcomb, had great depth and were likable. The plot reminded me of Stephen King’s The Stand. This is a four part series and sure to be a big hit. I would not be surprised if Duperre has a movie deal in his future.
