The Fault Beneath Us by Rose Clayworth follows Rose’s life from her marriage to Nabeel Fareed Fardan in 1976 through their years living in Kuwait and beyond. It tracks Rose’s work as an English teacher and TESOL expert, her cultural adaptation in Kuwait, and her efforts to build a life with Nabeel in the face of family issues, fertility struggles, and political upheavals. Key events include Rose’s teaching roles, pursuit of higher education, managing health and infertility issues with Nabeel, wading through cultural and social hiccups, and enduring regional conflicts such as the Gulf War. Rose and Nabeel’s marriage is rocked by a shocking revelation, and Rose is forced to make a difficult choice. Throughout, Rose’s diary entries and interactions reveal a detailed, evolving portrait of her marriage, career, and cross-cultural life over more than a decade.

The Fault Beneath Us by Rose Clayworth stands out for its richly detailed look at the life of a British woman in West Asia through Rose's attentive observations and candid reflections. The writing balances everyday moments while providing a thoughtful deep dive into the wider subjects of identity, language, and societal expectations. I most enjoyed Rose’s ability to portray the less-often-seen slices of life, be it within family gatherings, her professional settings, or black market music and magazines, and the sensitivity she shows, without judgment. The integration of her personal ambitions is noteworthy, and overall, between the book’s inviting and honest tone and the unique lens that readers are given, the narrative is inviting. This is a good read for anyone interested in expatriate life in 1970s and 80s Kuwait. Recommended.
