Author Biography

I don't know about your children, but my daughter is not the best listener. In fact, she thinks everything is up for negotiation! When she was 6 years old I wrote this story based on her lack of obedience. Children often do things out of the goodness and pure love in their hearts, but in doing so can often get into sticky, or even dangerous, situations. I hope is that this story will open a conversation on how important obedience can be, and the consequences for forgetting, between parents and their children and educators with their students.

Grace loves playing outside, looking at all the flowers that grow around her home. One day, while picking some flowers, Grace wanders so far from home that she can no longer see her mom, even though she was told to stay in sight so as not to get lost. Grace finds herself alone and scared until she meets a bird who is willing to help her find her mom. But, once again, Grace doesn’t listen to what the bird says and continues to find herself deeper in the forest, farther from home. Will Grace be able to meet someone or something to help her finally find her way back to her mom and dad? The Flower Girl by Nicole Patrice Thomas teaches children an important lesson about listening to what parents, guardians, and other loved ones say.

As tends to be the norm with children’s books, I enjoyed the vibrant and entertaining illustrations on each page of The Flower Girl. The characters were all so much fun to follow, and I loved seeing the inclusion of a couple of different animals throughout the book. I had a great time with this story and think it could be used on both an educational level and a personal one as well - to help improve reading skills with its lengthier wording while also teaching the importance of obedience. Nicole Patrice Thomas teaches a solid lesson that children should keep in mind, and I would recommend it to all families with younger children!
