The Forever Tree by Hilary Hawkes is one of those books that kids will love; no, it’s a book written for all kids, one that all kids will love. That could sound like a very daring statement, until one holds the book and gets to interact with it. It is a very symbolic work on the cycle of life and the different emotions, and the author has so cleverly used a wide collection of vibrant colors to provide a world where children can get in touch with themselves, learn about the different seasons of time and, most importantly, the seasons of their soul. The wonderful images are accompanied by poetry that will speak deeply to the heart of readers. Writing about summer, for instance, Hawkes says:

“It’s summer!
The sun is bright. White
clouds drift across the sky.
Your branches are full and
heavy with flowers and
amazing green leaves.”

Here is a book to have anywhere there are kids — at home, in schools, and in learning programs. It’s a work of genius that will help children get more and more in contact with themselves and understand that although the time does change, their values remain, like the strong roots of the Forever Tree. The book will also help kids, through the interactive exercises it offers, to understand that emotions aren’t permanent and that they can actually remove unhealthy ones from their lives by making choices.

The colors of the paintings are bright and beautiful, creating appealing visuals for the reader. The images are quite telling and designed to evoke an effusion of imagination in the reader. Hilary Hawkes comes across as a master in children’s art, an educator whose works will most certainly enrich the lives of many children. The Forever Tree is an inspiring, well thought out work of art that children will love.
