The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You: White Teeth, Pink Gums, Fresh Breath For Life by Dr Garry Bonsall sets out to debunk the myths that have developed over the generations about the best way to care for your teeth. It is an attempt to treat thousands, if not millions, more patients than he could ever hope to see personally in his consulting room, and annoy other dentists who will no longer be able to charge a fortune for doing dental work that patients who follow this advice will not require. Finally, he aims to end the most widespread disease in the world, which is, shockingly, gum disease. This results in the loss of teeth and the reduction in both physical and mental health of every individual sufferer.

Dr Garry Bonsall opens The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You: White Teeth, Pink Gums, Fresh Breath For Life with the background to his passionate desire to prevent gum disease: the distress of his own father who, at the age of only fifty, was advised to have all his teeth removed. A dental student at the time, Dr Bonsall became determined to find an answer: the result was the four secrets. My initial reaction was to feel a trifle smug. I had already implemented secret number one on the advice of a new dentist. Oh yes? There was nothing wrong with the advice: it simply didn’t go far enough, and after reading secret number two I went shopping, dated my purchases, and placed the items where Dr Bonsall instructed. Reading secret number three had me back to smug, but not for long! Secret number four has caused a revolution in our household: a bloodless revolution.

Few people like to visit the dentist, at least not many in my circle of acquaintances. The reasons for such public disdain vary, but the end result is fear of pain. That pain can be lessened with proper dental hygiene. It just makes sense: the better one cares for one’s teeth, the less repair is necessary in maintaining good oral health. In The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You, Dr. Garry Bonsall outlines a painless remedy to poor dental care and painful dentist visits. In Dr. Bonsall’s own words, “your teeth are for smiling.” By following the steps in this easy to read manual, you can claim the perfect smile without the cost of expensive dental work and unnecessary medical procedures.

Although this piece reads like an infomercial, it is evident the intent is sincere and the knowledge gained is valuable. The good doctor’s secrets are not revealed until chapter three, but the anticipation is well worth the wait. The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You is not an argument for good dentistry; rather it is a statement of reclaiming common sense in caring for personal hygiene and overall health benefits directly related to proper dental care. This is a must-read for anyone interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I found this extremely easy to read and attractive in its short length, void of any technical medical jargon. Even though the material is basically common sense, many readers will find a reinforcement of knowledge that is uncomplicated and inexpensive.

The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You: White Teeth, Pink Gums, Fresh Breath for Life! is a non-fiction health and wellness book written by Dr. Garry Bonsall. Dr. Bonsall is a practising dentist and dental surgeon with practices in Germany, Spain and Switzerland. Bonsall’s story begins with his father, who had been scrupulous in caring for his teeth and regularly visited his dentist. Thus, he was understandably outraged when not one but three dentists advised him that all of his teeth would have to be extracted. Bonsall was in his final year of dentistry school at the time and was able to advise his father on the necessary steps to take to save his teeth. When his father passed away thirty years later, he still had all his own teeth. In this book, Dr. Bonsall discusses what causes gum disease and how it can be prevented, and he reveals the four secrets he shares with his patients to help them keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Dr. Garry Bonsall’s non-fiction health and wellness book, The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You: White Teeth, Pink Gums, Fresh Breath for Life!, is well-written and informative. I appreciated learning exactly how bacteria begin the process of gum disease and was rather alarmed to learn that your own body’s immune system eventually attacks the supporting bone structure when it’s fooled into an auto-immune response by the film created by the bacteria. Dr. Bonsall’s four secrets are brilliant and easily put into practice. He explains the rationale for each secret succinctly, and his explanations make a lot of sense. I was impressed enough to start following his rules to ensure my gum health. The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You contains good practical knowledge, and, while it won’t replace gum surgery if the current condition of your gums requires it, it may very well keep you from ever needing such medical intervention. I was impressed by the knowledge and guidance I received from this book and highly recommend it.

The book begins with Dr Bonsall’s motivation for becoming a dentist and his desire to help others look after their own health as far as possible. Seeing his own father’s panic at the thought of having all his teeth extracted (despite regular teeth brushing and care) set the young trainee dentist on the path to discovering and promoting best practice in dental health.

The Four Secrets Your Dentist Never Told You is an easy-to-read book that will help the reader who is looking for dental health care advice find some good and workable techniques and ideas for teeth brushing and mouth health and hygiene. The writing style is clear and uncluttered with essential parts repeated. This book explains the causes and results of gum disease and how to stop and prevent it. The author importantly points out that taking care of our teeth the correct way can impact our overall physical health and prevent many of the illnesses that can follow gum disease. Types of brush, brushing techniques, whether or not to use mouth rinses, and what to do if your gums bleed are all discussed. By the end of the book you’ll feel as though you’ve had a useful advice session with a knowledgeable, friendly dentist who has your best interests at heart. A quick read full of useful and common sense advice that all good dentists would want their patients to know.
