The Further Travels and Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen is a satirical adventure-comedy novel by Ross Stein. Baron von Munchausen has roamed the lands for three hundred years, witnessing some of history's momentous events first-hand. While working for the king of the moon, the Baron receives a message from a concerned citizen of the United States, seeking his help on Earth. The Baron lands in Albuquerque, and after a minor incident involving identification papers, he meets the concerned citizen in a bar. He relates extraordinary tales to his companion that include taking extreme measures to ensure the impartiality of Supreme Court judges, hunting game with his musket, transforming himself into a beautiful woman to escape a duel, riding an ass through a tornado, saving an investment firm from financial ruin, witnessing kids being stampeded by an elephant after a book reading, and more.
Readers who love tall tales or enjoy sharp satire will have a blast with The Further Travels and Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen. With this hilarious yet thought-provoking novel, Ross Stein touches upon some relevant social issues of our time, such as bigotry, abortion, the rising threat to democracy, climate change, corporate greed, and more. You don't know what to expect from each chapter as colorful flavors of absurdism layer the Baron's tales. These will have you in stitches while making you think about the deeper layers of meta-commentary behind the narrative. Baron Munchausen is eccentric and intentionally over-the-top, but you can't help paying heed to every word that comes out of his mouth. The core narrative theme is a commentary on the increasing irrationality plaguing society at large. I found this book entertaining, provocative, and even poignant at times. Highly recommended.
