The Giant's Book of Poems by Daniel A. Freedman is a collection of original poetry, combining surreal imagery, episodic narration, and fragmented syntax to present observational snapshots of the extraordinary and ordinary. Cirche La Bas imagines sculptures in the Louvre speaking with humor and wisdom about life, with Father Time “getting the joke.” Test of Time catalogs repeated media forms like movies, remakes, radio plays, and bestsellers, employing variable line lengths and sarcastic diction to convey cultural saturation. Storm King sketches an apocalyptic storm with historical and pop-culture figures in surreal combat, while Change the Channel collects disjointed observations of media, twins, cities, and global events. Technicolor Dream follows a restaurant encounter with physicists discussing a poem, using literal dialogue and episodic narration to lean into absurdity and miscommunication.
Daniel A. Freedman’s The Giant's Book of Poems has really surprising depth that I wasn't expecting going in. It is a triumph of intelligent and playful poetry that is as unique as it is good. And it is really, really good. I have two favorites, the first being Lobster vs. Millstone, where a giant, mutant lobster’s nocturnal raid on a power plant transforms into a riotous spectacle, overflowing with humor and imagination that deftly proves “The lobster always wins.” The second is Sweet Letters, which offers a tender counterpoint in its portrayal of letters as sacred messengers connecting the earthly and celestial realms. Freedman's rhythm is melodic and feels like a “gentle blessing in my ear.” Overall, this is a collection that shines through its fearless originality and innovative approach, cementing Freedman’s skill as a poet capable of entertaining, enchanting, and making us all supremely happy. Very highly recommended.
