“Sometimes the past that comes back to haunt you isn’t yours.” The House on Chambers Road is a paranormal story by C.J. McGroarty. Libby Casey, a widow, is captivated by an 18th-century home and buys it. She hopes the change will help her forget the lingering remorse and grief of Ray’s death. After moving, Libby senses she’s not alone when objects appear or go missing. Cryptic whispered words and dreams of a man make her uneasy. She researches the house’s history and finds that the original owner was Hugh Jones. Libby is curious to know why Hugh’s spirit is moody and restless, and what the clues he leaves mean. Her obsession to find this out convinces friends that Libby is unstable. Nevertheless, she feels connected to Hugh and hopes that uncovering his past will help her live a normal life in the present.

The House on Chambers Road is a beautifully written ghost story by C.J. McGroarty. The beginning was great, enabling me to get to know the persona of the main characters bit by bit as the suspenseful story unfolded. Readers will become acquainted and bond with Hugh Jones and his family as the settings and drama alternate in chapters between the present and the 18th century. I admire Libby and think she was portrayed realistically. She expressed her true feelings and emotions while being brave. The story’s outcome was not what I expected, but it was a fitting ending. The House on Chambers Road is a delightful read.
