A baby owl is born and, like all newborns, this baby is very hungry. However, this baby owl, Ollie, never seems to outgrow his hunger and as he grows he eats more and more. His parents have a difficult time keeping up with the baby's growing appetite. Ollie never seems to tire of eating. When he starts hunting for his own food, Ollie eats alarming quantities of food and his greed makes him grow too big to fly. In fact, Ollie's stomach is so big and heavy that he has to hide in a hollow log on the ground each night to avoid predators. Ollie's bad eating habits have taken over his life. Is it too late for him to change? Will he ever be able to fly again, like the other owls he watches longingly each night? One night, Ollie decides to change his bad eating habits. He works really hard to cut down on what he eats to lose weight enough so that he can fly again. Will Ollie succeed?

In The Hungry Owl, A.M. Vela and Mary Esparza-Vela have created a beautifully illustrated picture book that teaches life values and lessons. It also teaches facts about owls. While young readers will learn the importance of recognizing bad habits and trying to stop these bad habits from taking over one's life, the story also includes interesting and important information about owls. This book is a valuable teaching tool, as well as being an interesting and amusing read. It is also bilingual - English and Spanish.
