The Last One: A Christmas Parable by Bil Howard is a story of desperation. Rebecca works hard to provide for her son Dillon and she wants the best for him; she wants the latest Battle Robot Commando toy for his Christmas present. Finally finishing work for Christmas, Rebecca heads off on a shopping spree but, after trailing around shop after shop, she is out of luck; nowhere has the toy left in stock. Reaching the last store, her temper rising by the minute, her parking space is stolen by a woman who heads in before her. Will Rebecca find what she is looking for? How far will she go to make sure her son has the Christmas present he really wants?
The Last One: A Christmas Parable by Bil Howard is a story that kind of sums up how Christmas is for many people. It is a stressful time of year and it’s made worse by the demands of other people, the thought that we must get the biggest and the best to please our loved ones, no matter what the consequences. Bil Howard has managed to convey exactly what Christmas means for some people, the rage when they can’t get what they want, and the consequences that must be paid whether we like it or not. Neat story, very well written and very well characterized. Although this was only a short story, I believe that Bil Howard would turn out some very good full-length novels and I would be interested in reading them.
