The Little Green Astronaut by Victor Alfaro is a children’s story illustrated by Christopher Alfaro. The story centers around a young lizard named Green who stows away on a NASA truck, which in turns takes him inside a rocket ready for launch. Green tags along on a journey to the moon, where he meets two astronauts and discovers all the wonders of space and the stars. When he notices something going wrong with the rocket, Green is able to use his lizard skills to alert the astronauts to the danger, thereby enabling them to fix the problem and return to Earth safely.
The Little Green Astronaut is filled with delightful cartoon-style illustrations that bring the key moments of the story to life, though some of them were a little misplaced during the action. Victor Alfaro writes effectively to produce an enjoyable narrative. I felt that the paragraph lengths were long for me as an adult reader, so I’d imagine that child readers would have to break them down quite a lot to stay with the story. It is a very entertaining plot and Green is a sweet little main character that everyone is sure to love. I very much enjoyed his accidental adventure and the way he was able to impact on the safety of the mission. Overall, I’d say that this book will definitely be an enjoyable read for stronger readers in its target age group, though less confident readers may need help to enjoy it as much.
