The Little Parrot and the Angel's Tears is a children's book written and illustrated by M. Anu Narasimhan. It is the author's retelling of a story that her grandmother told her when she was small, and which she, in turn, told her children. The little parrot lives in the forest and has many animal friends, but he secretly is unhappy because he is so much smaller than everyone else. One day, he saw that the forest was in flames and, at first, he began to fly away. Then he realized that his friends, who didn't have wings, could not escape, and he devised a plan to help them. He soaked his wings in a nearby stream and would shake the water off of them as he flew over the fires.
M. Anu Narasimhan's children's fable, The Little Parrot and the Angel's Tears, is a simple and elegant tale that is beautifully retold. The author also illustrated the story, and her watercolor pictures are marvelous, filled with colorful and striking images done in pen and ink with lush washes of color. I loved the way the pictures and the story merged to make a living story and was delighted by Narasimhan's illustrations, especially those of the little parrot. This is a perfect bedtime book that both adults and children will enjoy, and it's also a suitable read-alone story for young readers. The author's perceptive and intuitive pairing of image and text should help new readers expand their abilities while they follow the story. The Little Parrot and the Angel's Tears is most highly recommended.
