The Little Robot That Could by Kam Vivi Verde and Hale Verde isn’t a retelling of The Little Train that Could. Jetz, the little robot, is like a child wanting to play with the big kids and constantly being told he’s too little. The big robots all know what their jobs are. Jetz does not. He is in a hangar with a spacecraft at its center. That’s an exciting place for any child, and Jetz wants to get involved. The other robots don’t know what to tell him, so he seeks out some humans. Not just any humans but the ones who know exactly what he was programmed to do. They even know why he is so small. Computer programmers have given Jetz wonderful programs, and they need him to do his job. Jetz couldn’t be happier.

The Little Robot That Could by Kam Vivi Verde and Hale Verde is illustrated by Mike Motz who makes the robots look three-dimensional and cute as well as mechanically correct. The story is a retelling of the ever popular Teased Child Saves the Day theme. Jetz, the little robot, may be too small to do the big robots’ jobs, but he can repair anything. He can write computer programs to diagnose problems. He can repair wheels and fuel pumps and every other part of the spacecraft. And he was designed to be small, so he could travel aboard the spacecraft and fix things while it travels. Once the big robots understand how special Jetz is, they all admire The Little Robot That Could.
