The Memory Quilt is a children’s storybook by Lori Keating with illustrations by Alyssa Grizenko. The story follows Grace, a girl who loved spending time with her neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Davidson, and their son Jason. Every season, she and Jason had fun playing and making wonderful memories. Unfortunately, Jason suddenly died, and his parents stopped smiling. Saddened by their grief, Grace decided to do something special for them. Inspired by a classmate’s keepsake, Grace decided to make them a quilt from Jason’s clothes. Despite her lack of experience, she dedicated all her time and effort to stitching the clothes together. Will Grace’s efforts cheer the Davidsons and bring smiles back to their faces?
The Memory Quilt is a heartwarming story that tackles the topic of grief and sadness. Grace's and Jason’s parents were all experiencing the burden of Jason’s death and missing his presence. Although they were in pain, they still held on to the happy moments that they had shared with him. I loved the symbolic meaning of Jason’s clothes. They represented the memories that his family and friends remembered him by. The book reminds readers to cherish every moment with their loved ones. Lori Keating's skillful presentation of this message makes it easy for children to understand. The characters are everyday people that readers will relate to, and their stories transcend race, culture, and nationality. The beautiful illustrations correspond to the story and capture the emotions of the characters perfectly. I recommend that parents and caregivers read this book with their children to teach them about grief, the importance of making happy memories, and being compassionate to one another.
