The Mind is a work of fiction in the psychological and personal drama sub-genres and was penned by author Gloria Foster. It is suited for the general reading audience from teens upwards and contains some references to psychological trauma and mental health conditions. Our central protagonist is Sheila, who lives a relatively sedate life in Sommerville, Virginia, but is plagued by a series of voices in her head. With her childhood memories apparently blocked, Sheila must undergo a deeply personal journey with the help of a close friend to discover the truth about her past and the source of her problems today.
Author Gloria Foster has crafted a masterful novella in the art of unlocking and reconciling memories with her fascinating story The Mind. One of the features which most impressed me about this piece was the naturalistic storytelling style behind Sheila, the central figure. Sheila feels like a real person rather than a character, and it’s hard not to feel as though you’re reading an autobiographical work when the going gets tough and we delve deeper into her psyche. I enjoyed the supporting characters too. There were some really memorable remarks about Sheila’s issues from outside voices – for good and bad – that I have often heard in real life when people discuss mental health. All of this adds to the story’s realism and the bittersweet nature of the journey Sheila undergoes. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Mind to readers seeking short fiction that packs a psychological punch.
