Author Biography

Kimi Hall BEdEC was born and raised in the metropolitan city of San Francisco in California in 1981. Being raised as a biracial child of a single parent home, and surrounded by many different family structures and ways of life, she learned to accept these many differences in people as normal. Growing up, she was fascinated with the arts, creative writing and later studied performing arts until the early 2000s. She is now a devoted teacher and burgeoning author and illustrator of quality children’s literature. Her goal now is to create children’s books that help children feel represented in the world. The kind of books she would love to have in her own classroom.

Her first book A Mother’s Journey: A story about how we became a family is a book about infertility and the journey a mother embarks on towards achieving her dream child through donor sperm insemination. Her new books are The Missing Things & Some families. Two very different children’s picture books, although they both help introduce difficult conversations with children in a non-confrontational manner.

At times our children are sheltered from the lives of others. It's our job as parents and guardians to develop well-rounded children and we do this by helping them to discover the world around them. Children must learn that the world extends beyond their front door, backyard, street, or city. There's a whole new world out there for our children to explore. In this gritty and thought-provoking book, The Missing Things by Kimi Hall, children will discover what life is like on continents like Africa. Children will be shown things with honesty, transparency, and truth, with no filter. While it's hard to face reality, the story must be told. Not only are the descriptions of food insecurity, stolen children, no parents, or living with improper shelter powerful, but the author's illustrations speak for themselves and paint the picture of deprivation that the author wishes to convey. Children are supposed to have suitable conditions for optimal health, wealth, and emotional stability, but as depicted in the book, this isn't the case for every child.

The Missing Things by Kimi Hall was stimulating and expressive due to the message of injustice being conveyed from a child's perspective in Africa. This book is a reminder that there are other concerns, biases, injustices, and social issues that our children are still being faced with. While I enjoyed the author bringing this conversation to the fore, my heart was vexed that people are still being forced to live this way. Educate your child on understanding social matters and issues that are prevalent in the world today by picking up a copy of this book. Maybe it will be within your child's heart to make a difference. Highly recommended.
