The Morrigna by Chris Sherrit is a psychological thriller that follows the story of Brian Casey as he returns to his childhood home on the Isle of Skye, a place full of painful memories. He wanted to have an idyllic homecoming, but Brian's return is far from nostalgic. Instead of warmth, he's greeted by the familiar sting of small-town gossip and the subtle hostility of locals who never forgot his past. But something feels off this time. As Brian reconnects with old acquaintances, he senses a strange shift in them that he doesn’t like at all. To make matters worse, people are turning up dead, and the circumstances around them are far too strange to ignore. Before he knows it, Brian is pulled into a chilling mystery that may be tied not only to his past, but to the supernatural folklore of the land itself.
Author Chris Sherrit delivers a thriller wrapped in mysticism. I loved how the author creates tension and an atmosphere of suspense with the narrative. It is beautifully written and incredibly delivered. I loved how Skye is depicted as a little claustrophobic and often represents Brian’s inner turmoil. Brian is a complex protagonist; he is wounded yet driven. His struggle with the island’s oppressive energy is hauntingly relatable. The murders were almost a subplot to his growth and how he handled the situation. The pace was fast, the narrative was fantastic, and the descriptions were out of this world. The Morrigna is an incredible story. I highly recommend this book!
